My dear childhood friend is getting married this summer, and my hubby and I are so very excited for her and her wonderful fiance. For her shower, I decided to make her a present... a Nativity Set!My friend and I met when we were very young because we went to the same church. We later ended up going to the same elementary, middle, and high schools, belonging to the same Girl Scout troop, and sharing many of the same interests, including piano, band, newspaper, Scholastic team, Math team, and generally being cute nerds!
My hubby and I hope that they will bring out the Nativity Set each Christmas and think of us! I am not particularly big on organized religion, but I always love getting out the Nativity Set and setting up the little people.
The set for my friend is entirely handmade out of Sculpey (you may remember this from my additions to our nativity set), hand painted, and the barn/carrying case is made of felt. Here's the entire set:

Mary, Joseph, Jesus with a manger, and an Angel:

Shepard, Sheep, and Collie (my friend had a collie growing up):

Three gender-neutral Wise Persons, Camel, and Frankincense and Myrrh jars:

What an amazingly thoughtful gift! I cannot believe that this is not store-bought. It is great.
ReplyDeleteI'm just... in awe! What a beautifully thoughtful gift, I am sure it will be treasured by your friend's family!
ReplyDeleteI'm not religious either but I think all religions have stories, ideas and lessons that are important to reflect on. I'm loving your gender-neutral wisepersons :o)
WOAH that is some serious scuply talent! The camel is amazing! And that little pot, how long did it take you to make this?! Did you put a finish on it to make the pieces shiny? It looks absolutely incredible.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the kind words! I spent three weekends on this, but it was really fun to do... I set up some TV trays and watched movies while I was forming the people and painting them. After they were done, I coated everyone with Liquitex Gel Medium, Gloss finish (I bought mine at Dick Blick).
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh this is so awesome! You have a lucky friend. :-)
