Rag Curlers & Semi Me-Made-May 05.01.10

For the first day of Me-Made- May, I have to admit, I didn't wear any handmade clothing. But that is because I was trying out something else handmade---- Handmade Curlers!

I made 22 of these curlers. They have stuffing in the middle, with extra fabric on each end to tie them like a rag curl. While I was at it, I made a matching bag to keep them in.Yesterday evening, I tried them out. I first sprayed my hair with some diluted LottaBody, rolled my hair up, and hoped for the best. See how silly I looked! When I woke up this morning, I couldn't wait to see the results. Here I am after gently brushing it out. I wish I had taken a picture after I just finger-combed it--- because I looked like a Totally 80's Wild Animal! I think it looks really nice! And my combination rag/stuffing curlers were very comfortable to sleep in. Much better than the foam curlers that my sister and I would use as kids. Can't wait to see how long these curls last.

  2. My great-aunt introduced me to rag-curls when I was in second grade and I loved them! However, I've done them very few times since because its hard to do with your own arms! But when I was little I would put them in right after a bath at night when my hair was wet and they would be dry by the morning. Too bad it was a bit uncomfortable to sleep in :(

  3. Adorable curls! I can't believe you made the curlers yourself! Ok, I can, but it's still awesome.

  4. Okay, so it's been more than a year since you posted this, but I have to ask, how long *did* the curls last?

Also, do you have dimensions for your curlers? I'm thinking of making some myself, but don't know how big (or small) they should be. Any thoughts?

    1. The curls lasted 2 days. They were not as defined the 2nd day, but that is still really good for my stick-straight hair. (Using LottaBody helped the curls hold.) I don't do this very often because it takes forever to roll up all of my hair, but it turns out nicely.

I think my curlers started around 3.5" long, 1.5" wide, but they puff up a little smaller after you stuff them.

Thanks for the note!
