My Navy "Alison" Bathing Suit

I did something today that I never thought I'd do... I sewed my own swimsuit! From scratch! And it turned out ok!

I really had never sewn knits before, so this was entirely new for me. I read through my sewing machine manual, and who knew that my machine had all of the special nifty stitches that work great on stretchy fabric?!?
I used the Alison pattern from Burdastyle as a guide. The pattern is cute, but the instructions were terrible. So I made the instructions up as I went along, and I made some mistakes as well. I ended up adding length to the body of the suit, lowering the back, and making the straps go in an X on my back.
It's not perfect, but it's wearable, and I learned a lot from it. I may not be so scared of knits anymore! In fact, I'm so proud of myself that I just added "Sew Swim Suit" to my list of 30 Before 30, just so I can check it off!

  2. That looks great!! I'm still procrastinating on starting my own swimsuit project. I hope it turns out half as well as yours!

  3. It looks fantastic. I love the colour. I always find Burdastyle instructions terrible. I'm way too scared to try a swimsuit. I've read they're really difficult so you definitely should be proud of yourself.

  5. You look great in your new swimsuit! I'm working on a kwik sew swimsuit and the directions are awesome...I'm not brave enough to try a burdastyle pattern but you did a wonderful job.

  6. Wow, nice job! I agree, very brave to pose for photos but you look fantastic - and confident! Way to sew outside of your comfort zone and turn out something totally wearable :)

  7. I really like the suit -- and the criss-cross straps in the back are an especially attractive detail!
