I want to start off this post with an enormous THANK YOU to Cindy from Cation Designs. Back in December, she held a giveaway for this Care Bear sheet. Well, I freaked out a little bit because I HAD THIS SHEET SET AS A KID! These are the sheets that I snuggled up in every night! I even had the matching bedspread! I couldn't believe it when I won and received the sheet in the mail! Thanks so much, Cindy!

My first inclination was to make jammie pants out of the fabric, so I would wear it to bed again--like the circle of life. But then I got to thinking.... what would Cation do? What would Tanit-Isis do? Both have made awesome dresses from old cartoon-character sheets. (Want proof? See here, here, and here!) So I took a deep breath, cut into this precious fabric, and made it into a party dress!
This dress was truly a labor of love. I've been working on it on-and-off for a couple of months. And who knows if it will ever be worn in public. But I'm ok with that. The little girl in me, who had these sheets as a kid, would LOVE to know that I made a Care Bear party dress!!!!
Sewing Notes- I used McCall 6561 as a starting point. I had some frustrations---not sure if it was the pattern or the super-lightweight voile I used for lining, but there was some frustration trying to get everything to match up. And of course, I had to make things more difficult for myself:
- Because I don't do well with strapless bras, I decided to add in bust padding to eliminate the need for a bra. I wish I had taken some pictures of this process because the innards of this bodice are epic!
- Because I hate carrying a purse, I added 3 zippered pockets. 3 you ask? 2 side-seam pockets, plus a hidden pocket in the lower bodice to closely hold valuables like my ID and credit card. I'm quite proud of this idea! If I ever wear this dress in public, you had better believe that I don't want a purse distracting from its awesomeness!
- Because I hate it when dresses fall down, I added boning in the bodice and a waist stay at the waist. I also made the straps criss-cross in the back to help hold it up better.
After completing this dress, I still have some fabric left... probably enough to make some jammie shorts---which realistically will get much more wear than this dress. But admittedly, won't be as ridiculously epic! :)
Finally, for fun, does anyone have a favorite Care Bear? Let us know in the comments!

I had those care bear sheets as a kid too. I had several stuffed care bears as a kid, but my favorite was a hand made Tender heart care bear. So, he was my favorite care bear.

ReplyDeleteI bet a log of 80s children had those sheets as a kid!
DeleteBust padding? Boning? THREE zippered pockets? FABULOUS!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm pleased as punch that all of those extras worked out. Now to manufacture a reason to wear the dress...
DeleteIt's gorgeous!---and thanks for the shout-out. Maybe it's just me, but my Star Wars dress gets worn at least once a month. ;)
ReplyDeleteDamn, now I want to go trawl the thrift stores some more for cool sheets...
Thank YOU for the inspiration! The sheet fabric actually behaved nicer than I expected.
DeleteLOVE this! The dress is adorable. Totally reminds me of what I'd want to wear as a child to a tea party w/all my bff's (otherwise then known as my stuffed animal collection).
ReplyDeleteHa ha, yes!
DeleteThe little girl in me AND the mom in me smiles at the fancy care bear party dress that you made. I will be on the lookout for an awesome dress (vintage? fictional character?) to wear when you have your party!
ReplyDeleteThanks, mom!
DeleteAH I love it!! My favorite Care Bear was also Wish Bear. I had a stuffed animal of him that I slept with every night and I still have it! When I was little I had a Popples bed set (the yellow one was my favorite), but I'm sure if I didn't get that for Christmas, I would have gotten Care Bears.
ReplyDeleteI love your idea for the sneaky pockets. I don't like holding a purse when I go out, so I shy away from clutches, but a purse with a strap never seems to go with the outfit. You came up with the perfect solution!
Popples! Forgot about them! I had a hot pink Popple.
DeleteHehe so cute. This is one seriously epic party dress, you're right! From afar it looks like pastel flowers, but nope -- way better!
ReplyDeleteFlowers, huh? Maybe I can wear it to a baby shower. :)
Deletewow - this is truly an awesome dress! I used to love care bears!
ReplyDeleteCare bears are so sweet and cuddly.
DeleteYaaaaaay you did it!! I'm so glad you made the leap and did the dress instead of jammies. I love your ingenious bodice pocket!
ReplyDeleteThanks! You served as the inspiration!
DeleteWow! You put so much thought into the details of this dress! I would have totally wanted this dress when I was little (or a few years ago, or, now), too!
ReplyDeleteMy fave was cheer bear!!! Because I love(d) rainbows and pink!!!
Yes, if only I could go back in time and give this to myself as a little kid.
DeleteOh, this is so sweet! And so beautifully made. I bet this dress will be an automatic mood enhancer every time you wear it! Love it :)
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it's a happy dress.
DeleteThis dress is absolutely adorable! I used to love Care Bears, so I don't htink you could have used a more awesome cartoon!
ReplyDeleteMy favourites were Hugs and Tugs.
Hugs and Tugs? I don't think I know those characters... off to Google it!
DeleteWhoa I love this dress! You look gorgeous in it! I love the style and pattern you chose. I think you should make more of these in different patterns. As for this one, I can definitely think of some places you could wear it to this summer! ;-)
ReplyDeleteThanks Wanderlust! We'll see if it gets worn... I had fun making it, and may consider another if I find suitable fabric. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out on the sheet section of Goodwill.
